Happy Canada Day from Destinations Travel & Immunization Clinic!

Celebrating Canadian Leaders in Vaccines, Travel & Tropical Medicine, Public Health, and Epidemiology

This Canada Day, Destinations Travel & Immunization Clinic salutes the remarkable Canadians whose groundbreaking work in vaccines, tropical medicine, public health, and epidemiology has saved countless lives—at home and around the globe. Their legacies inspire our own commitment to keeping you safe and healthy whenever you travel.

Pioneers Who Changed Global Health

Dr. Frank Plummer (1952–2020)

A leading infectious‑disease researcher and former Scientific Director at Canada’s National Microbiology Laboratory, Dr. Plummer’s work on HIV, West Nile virus, and Ebola advanced our understanding of zoonotic diseases. His leadership during the West African Ebola outbreak helped develop critical public‑health strategies and pushed forward vaccine research that informs our travel‑clinic protocols today.

Dr. Gary Kobinger

Based at Laval University and formerly with Canada’s National Microbiology Laboratory, Dr. Kobinger developed one of the first experimental Ebola vaccines (rVSV‑ZEBOV), which proved highly effective in field trials. His innovations in rapidly deployable vaccines for emerging viral threats set new standards in tropical and travel‑medicine preparedness.

Dr. Jay Keystone (1943–2019)

A founder of Canadian travel medicine, Dr. Keystone established one of the world’s first dedicated travel clinics in Toronto and trained generations of clinicians in tropical and travel medicine. His pioneering work on malaria prophylaxis and dengue fever prevention continues to set the gold standard for pre‑travel consultations around the world.
