First West Nile Virus-Positive Mosquitoes Detected in Ottawa This Year – Here’s How to Stay Safe
Ottawa Public Health (OPH) has confirmed the first positive mosquito pool for West Nile virus (WNV) this year. While no human cases have been reported in Ottawa so far, the detection serves as a reminder: mosquito season is not over until the first hard frost.
At Destinations Travel Clinic, we want you to enjoy the outdoors—whether it’s in your own backyard, at the cottage, or traveling abroad—without the risk of mosquito-borne illness. West Nile virus, transmitted primarily by the northern house mosquito (Culex pipiens), is a preventable risk if the right precautions are taken.
Why You Should Care About West Nile Virus
Most people infected with WNV experience no symptoms. However, about 1 in 5 may develop flu-like symptoms within 2–14 days of being bitten by an infected mosquito, including:
- Fever
- Headache
- Muscle aches
- Rash
In less than 1% of cases, the virus can invade the brain and spinal cord, causing life-threatening illness—particularly in older adults and people with weakened immune systems.
How to Protect Yourself and Your Family
Mosquitoes carrying WNV can remain active until the first hard frost, so continue taking precautions throughout late summer and fall:
- Use an approved repellent — Apply a Health Canada-approved mosquito repellent with DEET or icaridin to skin and clothing.
- Be cautious at peak times — Mosquitoes are most active at dusk and dawn.
- Dress smart — Wear light-coloured, loose-fitting clothing that covers arms and legs.
- Mosquito-proof your home — Ensure windows and doors have intact screens.
- Eliminate standing water — Empty or refresh water in bird baths, flowerpot saucers, buckets, toys, pool covers, and rain barrels.
