Edward Jenner and the First Vaccine: How a Milkmaid’s Sore Changed Global Health
On May 14, 1796, Edward Jenner, an English physician, performed an experiment that would transform the world of medicine forever—and lay the foundation for modern immunology.
The Observation That Sparked a Revolution
Jenner’s idea was born from a common observation in rural England: milkmaids who contracted cowpox, a mild viral disease, rarely developed smallpox, a much deadlier infection. One such milkmaid, Sarah Nelmes, developed cowpox lesions after milking an infected cow.
Jenner took pus from one of Nelmes’s sores and used it to inoculate James Phipps, an eight-year-old boy. Weeks later, Jenner deliberately exposed James to smallpox. The boy did not get sick—an indication he had gained immunity.
Coining the Term “Vaccination”
In 1798, Jenner published his findings in the groundbreaking paper An Inquiry into the Causes and Effects of the Variolae Vaccinae. This is where the term “vaccination” originated, derived from vacca, the Latin word for cow.
Though the name of the cow is often said to be Blossom, there’s no evidence in Jenner’s writings confirming that.
Scientific Resistance and Ethical Questions
Despite the significance of Jenner’s discovery, his methods were not immediately accepted. His paper was initially rejected by the Royal Society, and it took years—and further proof—for the medical community to acknowledge the value of his work.
Today, inoculating a child without consent would raise serious ethical concerns, but in the 18th century, such medical experimentation was common.
